San Juanillo is a small fishing town on the Gold Coast of Guanacaste that thrives off the popularity of one of Costa Rica’s national treasures, Playa San Juanillo. Known for it’s white sand and golden sand beaches and incredible coast formations that create the signature ‘whale tale’ that draws locals and tourists year round. Yet this is still one of the least touristic beaches on the Gold Coast because of it’s remote location, that suits the locals just fine as crowds are virtually non existent except for peak season during Christmas and Easter. For that reason, the area is clean and uncrowded 95% of the time and the locals are determined to keep it that way.
The Beaches
Playa San Juanillo is truly a unique beach with it's unusual 'whale tail' formation that creates 2 distinct beaches back to back, jutting straight out into the ocean. The water is generally calm with no huge surfing breaks, so swimming is very nice but be careful of the surrounding rock formations. Around this area are a multitude of other fantastic beach of varying styles - some great surf beaches, some better for swimming, others so remote they suit only the more adventurous. All of it is part of the grand beauty that is the Gold Coast on the northwest coast of Guanacaste, named for the golden sandy beaches.
Services
The town itself is quaint and small and has basic services like restaurants, hotels, food shopping, ATMs etc. But there are larger cities like Santa Cruz and Tamarindo near by where all your service needs can be met. Located about 1.5 hours drive south from Tamarindo, San Juanillo can be accessed by paved coast road, or you can take a domestic prop plane to nearby Nosara. The international airport is 2 hours away in Liberia.
